We are lime mortar specialists based in Bristol specialising in lime plastering, lime pointing, lime rendering and stone walling. We use traditional materials and techniques appropriate for use on period, historic and listed buildings.

Our heritage builder provides sympathetic solutions for repairs on internal and external stonework using lime mortars, lime plasters and lime renders allowing the best possible breathability to conserve and restore your period home.

We are experienced period property specialists and restore traditionally built buildings such as Victorian, Georgian and listed properties in the Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset areas. Lime mortars are an essential component when making repairs on historic masonry and if done correctly will last for hundreds of years to come.

Lime mortars and lime haired plasters are porous and allow moisture to move freely between the stone or brickwork. Cement products essentially block this process trapping in moisture and causing damage to the historic stonework. We assist in the removal of cement pointing, plasters and paints and the reinstatement of lime mortars. We rectify damp issues on period properties caused by the failure of modern materials and rebuild historic walls matching the original lime mortar used in its construction.

Our preferred material is non hydraulic lime such as hot mixed air lime mortar which we slake ourselves on site. This sets using air to carbonate as apposed to natural hydraulic lime (NHL) which carbonates using water. Non hydraulic lime mortars require more skill and knowledge to produce but modern research suggests they are a closer match to historic mortars and the better mix in terms of flexibility and vapour permeability.
